The Space Between: The Disappearance of Adrienne Salinas

Adrienne Celeste Salinas was nineteen years old, a student at GateWay Community College in Tempe, Arizona, and by every account a young woman with her whole life stretching out ahead of her. Her father, Rick, would later describe her as “beautiful inside and out.” She liked to get dressed up. She cared deeply about the people around her. And on an early summer morning in 2013, she stepped out of her apartment and into a mystery that remains unsolved more than a decade later.

This is her story — and it deserves to be told.

A Night That Started Like Any Other

On the evening of June 14, 2013, Adrienne and her roommates hosted a birthday party at their Tempe apartment. Around forty people came. Music, drinks, friends — a normal Friday night for a group of college-age kids in the Valley of the Sun.

But Adrienne wasn’t quite herself. Her roommate Shainey Duggan would later recall that Adrienne had gotten all dressed up for the party, yet sat alone on her bed, not wanting to come downstairs. She was upset with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Francisco Arteaga, who she felt was paying too much attention to another girl at the party.

Around 2:30 a.m., the tension boiled over. Adrienne and Francisco left the party together, driving to his apartment in Scottsdale. But the visit was short — she didn’t want to stay. He drove her back to the apartment around 3:30 a.m., where her roommate Rebecca Flores saw her walk in safely.

The party was still going. People were in Adrienne’s room. She couldn’t settle in. After talking briefly with her roommates, she left again on her own just after 4:00 a.m., heading back toward Francisco’s place.

She never arrived.

The Quarter Mile

What happened next has haunted investigators ever since. Somewhere in the short drive from her apartment, Adrienne was involved in a minor car accident — she blew out two front tires just a couple of blocks from home. Her father would find the abandoned car there the following day.

Phone records show that Adrienne called a cab to pick her up at a nearby gas station. But she never made it to the station either. Police believe she was walking to the pickup point — a distance of roughly a quarter mile — when she vanished.

That quarter mile is the gap that has never been closed. No eyewitnesses. No surveillance footage. No forensic evidence left at the scene. Just silence.

A Family’s Worst Fear

Adrienne was reported missing on June 16 — Father’s Day. The family knew something was terribly wrong when she didn’t call Rick to wish him a happy Father’s Day, something she would never have skipped.

What followed was a massive community response. Thousands of fliers went out. Hundreds of people searched. Police dragged Tempe Town Lake. A reward fund grew as the weeks passed.

Then, on August 6, 2013 — nearly two months after Adrienne disappeared — a property owner discovered remains in a desert wash along State Route 88 in Apache Junction, more than thirty miles from Adrienne’s apartment. DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to Adrienne.

The condition of her body, exposed for weeks to the brutal Arizona summer, flooding, and the desert itself, left the medical examiner unable to determine a cause of death. The manner of death could not be officially classified. But police have treated the case as a homicide — because nineteen-year-old women don’t end up in remote desert washes by accident.

An Investigation With More Questions Than Answers

Detectives pursued multiple leads. They questioned Francisco Arteaga, the boyfriend. They tracked down and surveilled the cab driver Adrienne had called that night. They searched his vehicle and apartment but found nothing connecting him to her disappearance.

A critical piece of evidence — Adrienne’s cell phone — was initially found in her abandoned car by officers but was not immediately collected. By the time detectives returned to properly impound the vehicle, the phone had vanished. Where it went remains unknown, and with it, potentially crucial data about Adrienne’s final movements.

Over the years, investigators also looked at Bryan Patrick Miller, a man arrested in 2015 for the murders of two women in the Phoenix area dating back to the early 1990s. Miller was known to have been at a party near Adrienne’s apartment the night she disappeared. But no official connection between Miller and Adrienne’s case has ever been confirmed.

Why This Case Matters

Adrienne Salinas’ case is one that could have faded from public memory. A young woman, a complicated night, an inconclusive autopsy — the kind of case that risks slipping through the cracks of a system that too often moves on to the next headline.

But Adrienne’s family has never stopped fighting. Her father Rick has spent years advocating for answers. In 2025, the FBI selected Adrienne’s case as their Case of the Week and offered a $20,000 reward for information. The Tempe Police Department has stated they remain committed to the investigation.

Someone knows what happened in that quarter mile. Someone knows how Adrienne ended up in a wash in Apache Junction. And after more than a decade, that someone may finally be ready to speak.
