On the night of July 7, 2019, 30-year-old Cecilia Huerta Gallegos walked into the bedroom she shared with her husband. Surveillance footage captured her entering that room.
She never came out.
Hours later, the home’s cameras were mysteriously shut off. When they came back online, Cecilia was gone — and her husband, Reyes Gallegos, was captured unloading a chainsaw, trash bags, and shovels from the back of their SUV.
This is not a mystery. This is a case that should have shocked the city of San Antonio and galvanized the media. But it didn’t. Seven years later, Cecilia’s body has still not been found. Her accused killer has been released on bond multiple times. And few outside her immediate community even know her name.
This week’s episode of Vanished Voices, titled “Silenced in San Antonio,” tells Cecilia’s story in full — from her dreams and struggles to the chilling final moments caught on tape, and the long, painful pursuit of justice that has stretched for nearly a decade without resolution.
Who Was Cecilia?
Cecilia Huerta Gallegos wasn’t a headline or a statistic. She was a mother of four, a certified nursing assistant, and someone who, by all accounts, poured everything into building a better life for her children.
Born in 1988, Cecilia moved to San Antonio in 2012 with her two oldest children. She built a life there — finding work, love, and eventually, a home with her husband Reyes. Together, they had two more children and moved into a modest house on Southwick Street.
She was strong. She was hopeful. She was afraid.
In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, Cecilia told friends she feared for her life. She said her husband had become controlling and abusive — following her to work, accusing her of infidelity, and ultimately pulling a gun on her when she tried to leave. Just two weeks before she vanished, he physically attacked one of her coworkers in a jealous rage.
Cecilia tried to prepare. She installed security cameras in the house. She told a friend: “If I ever go missing, make sure you look for me.”
And then, she did.
What the Cameras Saw — and Didn’t
On July 7, 2019, Cecilia left work early after a tense, unannounced visit from Reyes during her shift. Surveillance footage from the nursing home shows him cornering her against a wall. She was shaken. She told her brother she feared something was going to happen. She rushed home.
At 7:39 PM, she pulled into the driveway. At 7:53 PM, the home’s cameras captured her walking into the bedroom she shared with Reyes. It would be the last image of her ever recorded.
Later that night, Reyes shut off the cameras.
When they were reactivated over 90 minutes later, Cecilia was gone. Reyes, however, was caught making multiple suspicious trips in and out of the house and to the family’s white Chevy Tahoe. At 6:27 AM the next morning, he drove away for more than two hours. When he returned, he began unloading a chainsaw, shovels, heavy-duty trash bags, and cleaning supplies. Then, he took a shower.
Only after that — after all of that — did he call 911 to report a vague “cutting in progress.” Not to report his wife missing. Not to ask for help. Just… a cutting.
Cecilia was never seen again.
The Investigation, the Arrest — and the Delays
San Antonio police quickly suspected foul play. Cecilia’s car, phone, ID, and belongings were all still at the house. She hadn’t taken her children. No one had seen or heard from her. And there was no video footage — none — of her leaving the house.
Still, it took more than two years before Reyes was arrested for her murder.
In August 2021, after pressure from family, community organizers, and nonprofit advocates, Reyes Gallegos was charged with Cecilia’s murder. A grand jury indicted him despite the absence of her remains, citing overwhelming circumstantial evidence.
But instead of moving swiftly to trial, the case stalled. Reyes was released on bond — not once, but twice — despite the seriousness of the charges and the risk to public safety. Court dates were repeatedly delayed, citing health issues, legal maneuvering, and scheduling conflicts.
As of now, his next court appearance is scheduled for January 26, 2026.
That will mark seven and a half years since Cecilia disappeared. Seven and a half years of waiting. Seven and a half years of her children growing up without answers. Seven and a half years with no body to bury.
Why Hasn’t the Public Heard Her Name?
One of the most painful realities of Cecilia’s case is that so few people know about it. Other high-profile cases — like Suzanne Simpson, a white woman from a wealthier San Antonio neighborhood who also went missing — received immediate media attention and swift movement through the justice system.
Simpson’s husband was charged and taken to trial within a year.
Cecilia? Two years just for an arrest. Still no trial. Little media coverage. Few headlines. Fewer hashtags.
There is a clear disparity in whose stories get told — and whose don’t. Cecilia was a woman of color, an immigrant, a working-class mother trying to survive an abusive relationship. That should make her story more urgent, not less.
But in the eyes of media coverage and community awareness, her case has been largely ignored.
Her family has had to be her voice. Her sisters, Mireya and Margie, have organized searches, held press conferences, pleaded for Reyes to take a polygraph, and created social media campaigns just to keep Cecilia’s name alive.
They shouldn’t have to fight this hard for the world to care.
Why We Told This Story
We created Vanished Voices to share stories like Cecilia’s — stories that fall between the cracks of the media cycle, but matter just as much as any front-page headline.
This episode was crafted with extensive research from police reports, media interviews, court documents, nonprofit investigators, and Cecilia’s own family. It is one of the most emotional episodes we’ve ever produced — not just because of the facts, but because of the silence that has surrounded them.
Cecilia deserved better.
She deserved better protection. Better coverage. Better urgency. And now, at the very least, she deserves justice — and for someone, somewhere, to help bring her body home.

Cecilia’s voice was silenced.
But we can still speak for her.
Her children deserve to know what happened. Her family deserves to bury her. And her name deserves to be remembered — not as a footnote, not as another cold case — but as the woman she was: brave, hopeful, and fighting to be heard.
Let’s make sure she is.
